On the Campaign Trail

It has been a busy, but invaluable, first two weeks of the campaign. I have had the chance to meet many voters and hear their hopes for Kansas along with their frustrations with the current state of affairs. I’ve also met with local business and city government leaders in Overland Park to hear the ways that policies from Topeka have affected their work locally. The hard truth is that it’s a tough time to make long term plans for businesses in Kansas. While there are any number of guesses as to what tax policy will be in the coming years, the only certainty is that the current policy is unsustainable. The uncertainty surrounding future investments in transportation pose another challenge for businesses. Highway 69, I- 35, and I-435 are economic corridors for our area and large sweeps of KDOT funds to plug budget holes has left their future maintenance and expansion in doubt.

In such uncertain times, businesses and individuals need assistance and support to navigate these challenges successfully. If you're seeking help with crafting a descriptive essay on the topic of Kansas's current tax policy and its impact on local businesses, consider exploring online resources for descriptive essay help online at https://123helpme.org/articles/descriptive-essay/ Professional writing services can provide valuable guidance and expertise to ensure your essay effectively communicates the complexities of the issue. With their assistance, you can create a well-structured and compelling essay that sheds light on the current state of affairs and sparks meaningful discussions.

Funding highways and promoting a stable business climate are not partisan issues, they are common sense priorities. The longer we delay a return to investing in our businesses and transportation, the more difficult it will be to fix.We need to address these priorities in a way that serves everyone and we need to do it soon. So when you take a break from working to elect pragmatic public servants, let the incumbents know how important our businesses and our roads are to life in Overland Park.

Why I’m Running

In the past week since I announced my run for the Kansas Legislature, I’ve spoken with a lot of curious people. “Why am I running?” Or as some of the more outspoken have asked, “Why would anyone run for office?”. Often I have been tempted to answer based on specific issues. I want to run because I am sad to see Kansas make national headlines for failed fiscal policies. I am frustrated that the legislature passed a sales tax hike in the dead of night and shifted the burden onto middle class families in stead of owning up to the failed income tax cuts. Or finally, I am running because I am fed up with hearing Governor Brownback tell us that “the sun is shining in Kansas” and his experiment is working while freezing school funding and sweeping away our highway funds to plug the gaping holes in the budget.

While all of these individual issues play a part, I think the core of the issue is much simpler: the interests of Kansans are not being represented in Topeka. The members of our communities were not crying out for radical fiscal experiments or accounting gimmicks to cover stagnant investments in schools. There was no mandate to drain reserve funds, and mortgage the future through unlimited transportation bonds to pay for self inflicted revenue shortfalls. Certainly no one sent representatives to Topeka to give Kansas some of the highest sales taxes on food in the nation. And yet, that’s what we have been given.

We deserve better. That is why I am willing to sacrifice the money, free time, and privacy that come with running for office. That is why I’ll be wearing down the soles of my shoes getting out to speak with voters in my community. I believe that we deserve candidates and representatives willing to work for the privilege of representing the needs of their constituents. And if you believe as I do, I hope that you will join me in the work.

Brett Parker Announces Campaign

Democrat Brett Parker Announces Campaign for Kansas Legislature To challenge Republican incumbent James Todd in House District 29

Overland Park, KS: Democrat Brett Parker announced Tuesday he was running for the Kansas Legislature. Parker is challenging Republican incumbent James Todd for the 29th House district.

Parker who was born and raised in Johnson County said he was motivated to run for office after witnessing how the great work accomplished locally was being undone by current political leaders in Topeka.

“I’m not a professional politician,” Parker said, “but watching our businesses, our hospitals, our schools, and our citizens in Johnson County all struggle in the turbulent economic climate created by Gov. Brownback and Rep. Todd made me want to get more involved.”

Parker, an English language teacher at Countryside Elementary School and Pioneer Trail Middle School, pointed to education as a top priority when elected.

“I’ve seen firsthand the detrimental effects, the policies advanced by Gov. Brownback and Rep. Todd have had on the students in our district. It’s time families in Overland Park had an ally, not an enemy, in the Kansas Legislature,” Parker said.

Parker said if elected, he would serve as a moderate voice for the 29th House district and the citizens of Kansas.

“Voters deserve a representative who is respectful and responsive to their needs,” Parker said. “I will work collaboratively in the Legislature to pass bills that grow our economy, create jobs, and expand the tax base. This in turn will allow us to invest in critical areas such as education and infrastructure development.”
